A river-flat village with a flood-shaped history
Terara sits on the southern bank of the Shoalhaven River, on ground that was actually the site of Nowra’s original 1820s river settlement before major floods in 1860 and 1870 pushed development elsewhere. That history still shapes the soil: river-flat alluvial ground, a fertile silty loam built up by generations of flooding, generally excellent for growth but genuinely prone to waterlogging and periodic inundation close to the river.
This is a small, thin-facts locality — the 2021 Census put the population at roughly 305 (postcode 2540), and there’s no separate detailed ABS demographic breakdown beyond that core count, so we’re not going to invent figures the records don’t back up. What the ground supports is low-density rural-residential and acreage living rather than suburban infill, reflecting Terara’s dairy-village and historic-settlement roots. Mild coastal weather and warm, humid summers drive strong lawn growth here, but the low-lying flats mean mowing has to work around drainage and flood recovery, not just the calendar.
