The Oaks (2570) sits at the south-western edge of the Cumberland Plain, roughly 290 metres up on the banks of Werriberri Creek, where the Camden-Picton basin turns on a hot, dry summer before handing over to cold, frosty winter mornings. The elevation takes a little of the sting out of the heat compared with the valley floor, but a lawn scalped too short in December still won’t make it to February without going brown.
This ground has form long before it grew a lawn. Clay and clay-loam soils that once carried market gardens, dairy herds and hay paddocks now sit under couch and buffalo grass through the village blocks around St Matthew’s timber slab church and The Oaks Hotel, with mixed pasture running out toward the paddock fence on the surrounding acreage. We’ve mown lawns a short walk from the Wollondilly Heritage Centre on Edward Street and out on the hobby farms past the village edge, so we know how this soil behaves wet and how it behaves dry.
