Lismore (2480) sits where the Wilsons River bends through the Northern Rivers, and the ground here grows grass like nowhere else in NSW. Around Lismore Square and up past the Quad and Lismore Regional Gallery, lawns run on broadleaf carpet grass, kikuyu and couch — thriving on rich red volcanic krasnozem up on the hills and deep alluvium down on the floodplain. The subtropical humidity turns growth explosive through summer; from November to March, a lot of Lismore lawns need cutting every week just to keep pace.
Much of the housing stock is older timber homes on generous blocks, split between the flatter streets near the river and the rises above it, and the community has spent recent years rebuilding after the 2022 floods.
