Mowing lawns from the old brick kilns to the vineyard fringe
Nulkaba grew up around the brick beehive kilns that still stand at Potters Hotel Brewery Resort on Wine Country Drive, and the red-brown clay-loam that fired those bricks is exactly what sits under most Nulkaba lawns today. Kikuyu is the standard grass here, and it does what Hunter Valley clay always does — it sets hard and cracks in a dry run, then turns soft and slippery within a day of decent rain. A mowing height that suits January in Nulkaba (2325) will scalp the same lawn in July, so we adjust as the season moves rather than running one setting all year.
Most of the suburb is settled brick-and-weatherboard homes on standard to generous blocks around Nulkaba Public School and St Luke’s Anglican Church, both well over a century old between them, but the blocks get noticeably bigger as you head toward the vineyard fringe on the Pokolbin side. Hot, dry summers with days regularly over 30 degrees push growth hard from spring to autumn, and it very nearly stops once the cold mornings of winter set in.
